What is the collagen Type II?

2016-08-26

Collagen Type II has fibrils that are important for providing tensile strength to tissues.  It makes up 50% of all protein in cartilage and 85-90% of collagen of articular cartilage. It can be found in articular and hyaline cartilages, and the eyes. Purified collagen II does not exist by itself, only in combination with glucosamine & chondroitin. It is therefore a different product.
Collagen Type II has been listed at the US National Library of Medicine Medical Subject Headings (MeSH).[1]
